Expressing Identity Online Through Virtual Avatars

"Expressing Identity Online Through Virtual Avatars" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Cassia Ogilvie, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

My project is the creation of a 3D character model following a standard video game development pipeline, to be used in VTubing on entertainment platforms such as Twitch and YouTube for video game and art content. My character will reflect my personality and interests while adhering to typical design attributes seen from avatars used by likeminded streamers and shall be created for my own hypothetical Twitch streaming channel. The drive for this project comes from my strong interest in creature design and 3D modelling. To create this character, I researched the history of existing virtual entertainers and explored what makes them so appealing to both audiences and content creators alike, looking at both design as well as their use of hardware and software.

Expressing Identity Online Through Virtual Avatars

Through creating a 3D virtual avatar, I studied how people expressed themselves when given the opportunity of 3D character creation. Why and how could this affect the online entertainment industry?

Project Motivation

I am very enthusiastic about character/creature design and 3D modelling, and aim to pursue a career developing such characters for video games and movies, a passion I have always wanted to follow since I was 6!
