More than Meets the Eye

Synopsis

More than Meets the Eye is a project looking at how the principles of game feel can be utilized to create a sense of embodiment between player and character, using the setting of Transformers. I sought to investigate and explore how game feel and animation principles can be used to engineer the feel of a powerful, hefty robot; a speedy, manoeuvrable car and a convincing, satisfying transformation between the two. To this end I developed a 3D platforming character controller prototype, allowing the player to traverse an environment as both a humanoid robot and a car, being able to transform at will.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

I'm really passionate about technical design, specifically designing the mechanics around a character controller and refining them until they feel great. I wanted to explore game feel, a really interesting aspect of game design to improve my practice and to look at how games have made players "feel" like particular characters. Plus, I'm a huge Transformers fan and I've always wanted to develop a Transformers game of my own!

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

Working alongside my peers to create some really awesome games together.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I'd love to enter the industry as a technical designer and work on some cool games while also developing my skills further.
