Within this game slice, the player will be able to explore this world alongside their companion and interact with them through various optional talking points throughout the area. The player will be allowed to connect with the companion, understand what their personality may be and bond. The intention with this project is to show that it is possible to create immersive interactions in a way that helps to build the players experience through talking with their companion and developing a friendship rather than the companion acting like a robot sidekick. With the companion being able to decide what they find interesting, it shows more depth to their character and shows that they also have thoughts and feelings. Making this optional then allows the player to decide what their character would do within that situation; would they interact or not?
Playing a lot of games that feature various NPCs and companion characters, I have been disappointed in many of the performances of the interactions. This is what motivated me to do this project, I wanted to research and discover why it is that I feel this way about various characters and what could be done to improve these performances. I have learnt a lot in how to make companion characters act and seem more human to create a more immersive experience for players and while this has been improved in recent games it is still a factor that can be and has been overlooked.
“Creating an immersive experience through character interactions” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Bethany Wilson, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.
