The Workings and Influence of User-Avatar Relationships

My project explores the relationship that is developed between a player and their controllable character, their avatar, in video games. As games are a uniquely interactive medium, I was interested in the importance of how a game character must 'feel’ good to inhabit. My project explores how the relationships initially form, how they can be manipulated using systems and mechanics, and how the relationship can alter players' behaviour and motivations. I created a digital demo which explores user-avatar relationships by manipulating factors and analysing the behavioural changes of users.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

I read a paper that really highlighted new concepts to me regarding how people can perceive video games and the characters they inhabit. I wanted to explore this topic to give me a greater understanding of user psychology before I move on to join the industry.

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

My favourite times at Abertay have always been the group projects. I've worked with so many interesting people to create projects I am so proud to showcase and discuss with others.

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

I'm considering a postgraduate degree at Abertay, or just trying to jump straight into industry - just a small role would be an honour.
