Turbulence: An Approximation of Wind Physics and Airflow for Video Games

“Turbulence: An Approximation of Wind Physics and Airflow for Video Games” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Aristophanes Thomas Yates, a Computer Game Applications Development student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project explores how physics-based techniques can be used to improve wind and obstacle interaction for use as a feature in a video game, and which techniques are practical for use in video games.

Elements of Navier-Stokes are used to generate approximated wind "keyframes" that the system interpolates between to produce a practical approximation of wind, whilst maintaining light-weight computability.
