Patent Law in Games: A Guide for Indie Developers

Game development doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Every game, mechanic, and tool is built around and inspired by pre-existing work and knowledge. When access to those vital industry building blocks is taken away through IP protection, how does that affect how game developers work together? How can they account for that in their work? This project, an in-depth exploration of the effects of patents on games industry collaborative practice, aims to answer these questions through the creation of a non-advisory guide to patent law for developers.

What motivated you to develop/create this project?

I've had an interest in law for a while, and while I was thinking of project ideas, I came across the Accessibility Patent Pledge from Electronic Arts (EA). I was motivated to find a way to explore it and the repercussions of its existence, good and bad, and now here we are!

What has been a highlight of your time at Abertay?

I had the opportunity to attend the grad show last year, as a third year, to show off my professional project made as a part of what was then DES310. That was what inspired me to want to present my project this year-- I loved getting to see people so excited about everyone's work!

What are your hopes and future ambitions for after graduation?

In my wildest dreams, I would love to be able to work as a producer for a studio somewhere (maybe somewhere warm, but I'm not too fussed). I'm open to any opportunities that sound interesting, though, so who knows!
