‘Walk About’ : Exploring The Portrayal of Emotion Through Non-Verbal Communication Within Animation

"‘Walk About’ : Exploring the Portrayal of Emotion through Non-Verbal Communication within Animation" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Nathaniel Hammersley, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project explores the concept of non-verbal communication with a focus on body language, from the theory behind it, to application and interaction with external stimulus. ‘Walk About’ is a low poly, flat colour walking simulator with the main deliverable for the project being its cinematic gameplay trailer. The project focuses on applying theory to animation in a game engine setting, the chosen engine being Unreal. ‘Walk About’ aims to help push my animation and technical art skills using this theory to enhance the performance of my animations.

‘Walk About’ : Exploring The Portrayal of Emotion Through Non-Verbal Communication Within Animation

'Walk About' is a low poly walking simulator set in the New Zealand bush, focusing on the use of emotion through non-verbal communication.

Project Motivation

I have always had an interest in animation and travel with New Zealand being high on my list of places to go. This paired with New Zealand's vast, unique wildlife made the perfect setting for my project. I was motivated to research about body language and non-verbal communication as this is a huge part of creating believable animations full of life, I hoped this project would push me to learn new things and develop my skills within animation and technical art.
