Using orthogonal unit differentiation to design tools for weapon balancing in first-person shooter games

'USING ORTHOGONAL UNIT DIFFERENTIATION TO DESIGN TOOLS FOR WEAPON BALANCING IN FIRST-PERSON SHOOTER GAMES' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Morgan Skillicorn, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project looks into the difficult task of game and weapon balancing with a specific look into the use of tools and systems that can compliment the balancing process. It focusses on the use of data abstraction and visualisation and how orthogonal unit differentiation can be used as a tool when balancing weapons in a first person shooter setting. This project was developed in the Unity engine with various editor tools being created to generate, visualise, analyse and balance weapons accordingly.

Project Motivation

I am interested in the systems that make games work and how tools can be designed to create them. I designed this project in order to showcase my technical skills and to improve as a tools/systems designer.
