Creating Engaging and Visually Interesting Game Characters

"Creating engaging and visually interesting game characters" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Lowrie Dickson, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project explores design techniques used in both the film and gaming industries to create visually interesting and engaging characters for players to interact with. Both industries have similar creation techniques to make memorable characters, such as using silhouettes and shapes to influence how they are perceived by the audience, or using anthropomorphic designs to increase relatability. The benefits of creating micro personalities for characters was also considered, as their backgrounds can help establish a more immersive player experience. These techniques were used in the creation of my own game characters, resulting in two well-rounded game-ready models.

Project Motivation

I wanted to take the opportunity in my final year to learn new techniques - both conceptual and technical - to help refine my skills in games character creation. I wanted to challenge myself to create the best models I could make to add to my portfolio and be something I could be proud of.
