Comparing Villain characters to their Hated Counterparts in Narrative format to identify the Separation Points between the Two

This project focuses on exploring the differences between villains and hated characters. Present day villain characters are often loved and, in some cases, favoured regardless of their actions. At the very least, they avoid being victims of hate that villains have been many times in the past. Nowadays, you can have two characters commit the same crime; one will be adored by the audience and the other despised. My honours project explores what creates a hated character and why they are no longer the same as a villain.

This narrative game explores the methods and techniques used to subvert hatred towards villain characters. Follow the villains as they unfold their plot to take power, whilst facing-off against the characters made to be hated. Use clues in each chapter to find the next on the map, or explore to find additional character-building scenes.

Comparing Villain characters to their Hated Counterparts in Narrative format to identify the Separation Points between the Two

A text-based game designed to explore the difference between villain characters and the characters we hate, highlighting why the two are no longer mutually exclusive.

“Comparing Villain characters to their Hated Counterparts in Narrative format to identify the Separation Points between the Two” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Lisa Mendham, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Motivation

I’ve always found villains characters to be more interesting and fun than run of the mill heroes. They get more freedom in their actions and words and that’s more fun to make. I wanted to make a project with them at the centre and so I focused on the fact that they used to be hated just for being villains and now they’re not.
