Interactive narrative and storytelling in games

This practice-based research project investigates the relationship between storytelling and game play. It explores the history and evolution of game narratives and identifies what we can learn and adapt from traditional narrative techniques used in other storytelling mediums.

Theory and techniques are explored in practice through the process of designing a short game experience that plays on the interactive nature of games in telling its story. It aims to be narratively immersive and emotionally engaging.

Interactive narrative and storytelling in games

This project explores how narrative theory and traditional storytelling techniques are applied in gameplay design to improve the way in which games tell stories.

“Interactive narrative and storytelling in games” is a 2021 Digital Graduate Show project by Linda Turunen, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Motivation

There was a university project last year where my work did not meet my expectations. I wanted to try and do more work to improve my skills at designign meaningful gameplay.
