Games as a Poetic Medium

How does one make games that allow for creative expression? In this project I explore this notion by looking into making a game that delivers a poetic experience. I explored how a single developer can design, code, write and compose in a way that creates a poetic end result. The game takes inspiration from certain features found in written poetry such as an emphasis on rhythm, tone and symbolism, while looking to develop an appreciation for the unique ways in which games can provide an experiential meaning.

Games as a Poetic Medium

This project explores how a poetic experience and aesthetic can be presented and developed in games.

"Games as a Poetic Medium" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Harry Dub, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Project Motivation

I have always been interested in exploring how games can be used as a medium for exploring emotions and experiential meaning. It is easy to look at other mediums that achieve this. I looked at poetry, trying to find inspiration that could allow me to develop a game that achieves what poetry achieves in a unique and interesting way.
