The Use of Children's Books for Early Water Safety Education

"The use of Children's books for early Water Safety Education" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Emily Strachan, a Computer Arts student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

Every year, 400 people drown in the UK in the sea, rivers, and lakes. By introducing easier to access educational water safety tools more people will have the basic knowledge to react in an emergency and know how to avoid them. This project explores the possibilities of using illustrated children's' books and narrative storytelling to discuss water safety at an early age. The final outcome is a 24-page illustrated book targeted at 3-6-year-olds with a fun story that informally discusses key safety practises and techniques within an engaging and enjoyable story.

The Use of Children's Books for Early Water Safety Education

An Exploration into the use of Illustration and Narrative Storytelling as an Informal Teaching Tool for Water Safety Education.

Project Motivation

I have been a swimming teacher and lifeguard for more than 5 years and have swam all my life. Water safety is a subject I am really passionate about. Last summer in the space of 2 weeks, 28 adults and children drowned in Scottish lochs. Watching this on the news was heart-breaking. I wanted to use this project to create a fun educational tool that would make learning about water safety easy from a very young age to help give more people access to basic knowledge about staying safe.
