Dreaded Cosmos

How can concept art be used effectively to develop world-building in support of game design? For this project, I have been researching concept art practices and how they can effectively be used in the development of world-building in the support of a wider game project - breaking this down further into key questions: What do we know about how concept art is used for world-building in games? How is concept art best used in the pre-production of a speculative games project? How are horror themes used effectively in concept art and games? This project has culminated in a full-colour art book exploring the player character concept, environment concepts, creatures concepts, and the wider world-building element.

Project Motivation

The main reason I wanted to pursue this project is because I have a keen interest in the Sci-Fi Horror approach when it comes to the unknowns of space. Instead of the hopeful message that you would find in IPs such as Star Trek, or even Star Wars, I find the idea of the unknown and the danger of deep space to be a more fascinating take, and one I hope to capture in this project.
