Enhancing learning and promoting tourism through digital heritage site reconstruction

The purpose of this project is to look into how digital interactions can be created in order to help users to better understand topics regarding cultural heritage and history. With obstacles such as the COVID-19 pandemic and historical buildings becoming inaccessible due to health and safety precautions, it begs the question how these invaluable sites can be preserved digitally to be enjoyed and accessed freely. This study will take the historical ruin of Loch Leven Castle and attempt to create a conceptual reconstruction of the location as an interactive prototype.

Enhancing learning and promoting tourism through digital heritage site reconstruction

This prototype will explore how an interactive reconstruction of a historical ruin can enhance and benefit learning and understanding while focusing on conserving cultural heritage and promoting tourism.

"Enhancing learning and promoting tourism through digital heritage site reconstruction" is a 2022 Digital Graduate Show project by Becky Esplin, a Games Design and Production student at Abertay University.

Project Motivation

I have always enjoyed exploring Scotland and visiting many heritage sites including castles and museums. More recently I've noticed that some places are closed due to health and safety risks and also due to COVID-19 restrictions. With this in mind, I set out to create an explorable prototype of these cultural sites, similar to a virtual tour guide that could act as a valuable alternative.
