Can competitively balanced shooter levels be created using procedural generation?

'Can competitively balanced shooter levels be created using procedural generation? ' is a 2023 Digital Graduate Show project by Aaron Crawford, a Computer Game Applications Development student at Abertay University.

Synopsis

This project aims to develop a procedural map generation system, to analyse how effectively it would impact the user's experience in a competitive multiplayer game. A procedural map generation system was created, allowing developers to quickly generate balanced levels intended for third person shooters. To create and evolve balanced levels, a cellular automata algorithm was used. This algorithm is highly customisable and allows for interesting levels to be generated.

Project Motivation

I have always been fascinated by competitive shooter games and since starting my degree, I have taken a keen interest in level design. When creating competitive shooter games, the level design is an important factor as this helps to ensure that the game is competitively balanced. Level design can be a very tedious process, sometimes taking months to generate a good level. For this project, I wanted to create a tool that would help developers rapidly produce competitively balanced levels, that could then be edited to their preferences.
