If you're in 5th year at school or at college, are studying a science, technology, engineering or mathematics course at Higher level and have obtained good National 5 or Intermediate 2 grades, you can apply for a 4, 5 or 6-week Nuffield Research Placement by completing the online application form. Please note that an application does NOT guarantee a placement.

Application Hints

After the closing date, applications are forwarded to appropriate supervisors for their consideration. You may be invited for an informal interview.

If offered a placement, you'll agree start and finish dates and hours of work (normally 9-5pm Mon-Fri) with your supervisor, discuss the outline of your project and receive information on any reading material to look at before you start your project.

No one is excluded on a financial basis as all your travel costs to and from your placement will be covered. If you meet one or more of the following criteria, you may also be eligible to receive an additional weekly bursary:

  • Are eligible for, or in receipt of, Free School Meals, or have been in the last six years.
  • Are receiving discretionary payments at school or college*.
  • Have a total household income below £30,000.
  • Are living in, or have lived in, local authority care.

*Please note: This does not apply to academic scholarships at independent schools.

At the end of your placement, you'll be required to submit a report on the work you have carried out.

You'll also be invited to display your work in poster form at a celebration event where you will also be presented with your certificate of achievement.
