The health and wellbeing industries are booming and yet UK obesity levels have more than trebled in the last 30 years. Promoting fitness and balanced nutrition has never been more important and careers in this area are likely to expand further in coming years.

What you study

What you study
Teaching draws on the core disciplines of physiology, psychology, biomechanics and nutrition. In first and second year, you will study sport and exercise science within a broad context and learn the fundamentals of nutrition. In years 3 and 4, you will study the importance of promoting physical activity and good nutrition for public health. You will have plenty of opportunities to apply theory to real life during work placement opportunities and practical exercises.

Nutrition Through the Lifespan; Psychology of Exercise and Health; Physical Activity and Health Promotion; Physiology of Lifestyle Diseases.

Entry routes

Minimum Entrance Requirements

English and Maths: 
All applicants must have a pass in English and Maths in any of the following: National 5 grade C or GCSE grade C/4

YEAR 1:
Higher
 ABBB; A Level BCC; Irish Highers H3H3H3H3; BTEC Extended Diploma MMM; International Baccalaureate 29 Points
Essential subjects: ‌At least one of Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or PE
AHEAD - successful completion of the relevant stream of our AHEAD programme
SWAP - our Coming from College pages list approved SWAP courses 

YEAR 2:
Advanced Higher: ABB (to include at least one of Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or PE)
A Level: ABB (to include at least one of Maths, Biology, Chemistry, Physics or PE)
HNC - our Coming from College pages list approved HNC courses

If you have the potential and motivation to study at university, regardless of your background or personal circumstances, we welcome your application.

We know that some people have faced extra challenges before applying to university and that is why we consider the background in which your academic grades have been achieved when making an offer. 

If you expect to receive passes in 3 Scottish Highers (grades A-C) and have:

  • been in care, or
  • participated in a targeted aspiration-raising programme such as LIFT OFF, LEAPS, FOCUS West, or Aspire North
  • no family background of going to university, or
  • live in an area, or attend a school, where not many people go to university.

We encourage you to submit an application.

International Applicants
You must provide certified proof of your English language level (minimum requirements are listed here).  Our British Council accredited International English Foundation Course can help you reach that level or, if you would like further develop your academic English, Intensive English for Academic Purposes can help you achieve your full potential.

Your career
This bespoke programme allows you to study both nutrition and sports science, giving you an edge in the graduate job market. You will be well equipped to work in a wide range of fitness and health professions. The programme is also aligned to the Association for Nutrition (AfN) accreditation requirements for nutritionists.

The programme provides a built-in work placement matched to your career interests. You will also hear guest speakers from a range of organisations including the Dundee Healthy Living Initiative, HEML Training Dundee and the NHS.
