Accounting and Finance

Accounting will always be in demand. All organisations need to understand where their finances come from, how they are being used and what is left over. Remember, many CEOs started out as accountants.

Next Start Date: September

Degree type: BA (Hons)

UCAS Code: NN43 BA/AcF

Duration: 4 years (full-time)

Introduction

The appeal of an Accounting degree from Abertay is that we will ask you to think in different ways, to be creative and to really understand all aspects of the business world.  We believe that accounting can be an exciting career path.  Remember, many of the CEOs of major companies started out as accountants.

Why choose this course?

  • Accounting is always in demand.
  • This course offers professional body accreditation from CIMA, ACCA and AIA.
  • All students receive CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants) student membership. CIMA is the largest professional body of management accountants in the world.
  • Live business engagement working on problems set in real time by clients.
  • Enhance your CV and job prospects through extra-curricular activities such as the IBM Universities Business Challenge, Entrepreneurship Brains Made on Campus (EBMC) in association with Stuttgart Media University, Germany, Peer Mentoring of Secondary School students and Charity challenges. Many of these opportunities involve inter-university working and overseas travel.
  • Fancy studying abroad? We have many partners in Europe and beyond where you can study, in English, for a term.

Organisations, be they public, private or third sector, all need to understand where their finances come from, how they are being used and whether they have any left.  Without this vital information, the organisation is not sustainable.

Although many students start at Year 1, there are also many who join this course after an HNC (into Year 2) or an HND (into Year 3). Regardless of what point at which you start this course, staff are actively engaged in ensuring you are well supported and can achieve to the best of your ability.

Last year, a £5000 Murray Taylor Scholarship was awarded to the strongest candidate applying into Year 1. Future scholarships may become available during the academic year.

Being a professionally accredited programme, there is a strong reliance on exams as assessment.  However, students are well prepared for these with lots of examples being practiced in class in advance.  Additionally, we use a wide range of other assessment techniques ranging from presentations to online discussions to solutions to industry posed questions.

Career prospects
Recent graduates have joined companies such as Lloyds Banking, Henderson Loggie, Centrica, Ernst & Young, NCR, BNP Paribas, HSBC in finance and accounting related positions. Some of these positions have included overseas travel.  One of the key aspects of accounting is that it has a global appeal.

Although the obvious route for someone with an accredited accounting degree is to become an accountant, many use their skills and knowledge in the wider business arena where a strong numeric background and understanding of company finances makes them valuable additions to business units.  There are also opportunities for internships through engaging with local and international companies.

The way we teach at Dundee Business School is designed to ensure you have a real-world experience of what it is like to work in finance and accounting and that we prepare you for this through live business projects and simulations.  Our aim is to ensure we create graduates who can 'hit the ground running'.

Industry links
The course has extensive links with industry with speakers and projects coming from a number of areas.  Last year industry links included Dundee Social Enterprise Network, Stagecoach and Children First.  There were also talks from representatives of two major professional accounting bodies - ACCA and CIMA.
