Short-term mobility scholarships

Are you planning on going abroad for a work placement, summer school or another short-term opportunity but you don’t know whether you can afford it? The Short-Term International Mobility Scholarship could help you fund your international experience.

What kind of funding is available?

The Short-Term International Mobility Scholarship assists students to undertake short-term study/work/volunteering abroad to enhance their learning by providing an international experience. This short-term international mobility experience can be undertaken in eligible destinations all over the world*.

Eligible activities include:

  • Short-term study experience or research trips
  • Paid or unpaid internships or work placements
  • Short courses and summer schools
  • Volunteer projects
  • Practicum or clinical placements

*Funding may be used to support students to study or work across the world, with the exception that funding must not be used for travel to destinations that are assessed by the British Government as an area to which British citizens are advised not to travel. For more information see

Applicants are eligible to apply for a scholarship of up to 50% of the overall cost to contribute towards travel expenses, accommodation, fees and incidentals (up to a maximum scholarship of £1000). The University will decide on the maximum contribution to the applicant’s proposed mobility costs based on estimated costs provided by the applicant.

In order to widen participation, priority will be given to students with an annual household income of less than £24,000 as evidenced by student loan awards from SAAS or other agencies (in the case of EU students, other proof of income such as tax statements for the past tax year will be accepted). Priority will also be given to students applying for their first international study or work experience.

Scholarship purpose

The scholarship aims to:

  • Increase the overall number of students with an international experience related to their field of study
  • Encourage students to consider longer-term mobility options through a short-term international experience
  • Assist Abertay University in diversifying its international programmes by promoting participation of minority groups, innovative options and non-traditional destinations
  • Increase collaboration between Abertay University and other higher education institutions or organisations overseas

When can I go abroad?

You can apply for this scholarship to support mobilities in Term 1, Term 2 or over the summer.

We accept applications on a rolling basis depending on availability of funds. Applications have to be submitted before the start of the planned mobility.
