EU Visiting Student Programme

Our EU Visiting Student Programme gives EU students the opportunity to study at Abertay even if their university doesn't have Erasmus+

EU Visiting Student Programme

Abertay University offers a flexible programme for visiting students from higher education institutions in the EU and which are not Erasmus partners (if you are from an Erasmus partner institution, please see our Erasmus+ Exchange page for more information).

Please note that the available places on this programme are limited.

Deadlines for 2020/21 academic year:

  • 15 May 2020 for semester 1 and full year 2020/21
  • 15 October 2020 for semester 2 2020/21

Academic calendar

  • Semester 1: usually starts in late August/early September and ends in mid-December
  • Semester 2: starts in early January and ends in early May

Decisions will be announced as soon as possible after the deadline. Late applications are welcome depending on availability.

Who can take part?

Undergraduate and postgraduate students currently enrolled at a university in the EU.

What can I study?

Please visit our Incoming Students Course Offer page, which details the different subject pathways available to you.

You will need to select 1 pathway, relevant to the semester that you plan to come to Abertay. In the application you will select this pathway, and then be able to choose any other options as indicated on the pathway.

These subject pathways are based on the studies of full time Abertay students, and hence are likely to fit in with the timetable. We are not able to guarantee taking modules from different pathways or years, as these often result in timetable clashes which are not allowed.

Do I receive academic recognition and credit?

EU Visiting Students will receive an Abertay transcript so that their credits can be transferred to their home university.

Abertay uses the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). One SCQF credit point is equivalent to 0.5 ECTS credits, so a full workload of 60 SCQF credit points per semester equates to 30 ECTS credits.

Please note that as an EU Visiting Student you are not eligible to graduate with an Abertay degree.

Fees, finance and funding

Tuition fees for EU Visiting Students are currently

  • £1820 per 120 SCQF credit points for undergraduate modules
  • between £4300 and £5400 per 120 SCQF credit points for postgraduate modules

Fees are subject to change, however please consult our programme pages for the latest indication of fees for your particular programme of study.

If you take less than 120 SCQF credit points because you would like to study with us for one semester only then fees are charged on a pro rata basis. Full-time students should take modules worth 60 SCQF credit points (equivalent to 30 ECTS credits) per semester, which would give a fee of £910 for the semester.

The tuition fees for EU students in the 2020/21 academic year have been confirmed by the Scottish government at the amounts stated above. We are not yet able to state the tuition fees for the 2021/22 academic year, but will publish this on this webpage and our tuition fees webpage once this is confirmed.

Please note that the Students Awards Agency for Scotland (SAAS) does not fund tuition fees for EU Visiting Students. You could, however, be eligible for tuition fee support from your home country. Please contact the International Office at your home university for more information.

Dundee is an affordable student city with the cost of living estimated at 12% below the UK average.

How do I apply?

Applications for the 2020/21 academic year (1st semester and full year exchange) will open on 1st April 2020, following the nomination deadline. The deadline to complete your application is 15th May 2020.

Details of the application form will be updated here by the end of February.

Students must be nominated by the international/study abroad office of their home university by 1st April 2020. Please contact your international/study abroad office and ask them to nominate you.

If my application is accepted, what comes next?

If you are given an offer you will also be issued with a unique student number. This number, which you will keep for the duration of your studies at Abertay, allows you to access the part of our website which contains details (dates, location etc.) about registration and enrolment for your course. This information and other details will also be e-mailed to you.

All international students are invited to attend an International Student Welcome event and orientation programme before the start of teaching. For more information on this and advice on how to prepare for your stay in Dundee, please see our International Guide.
