Erasmus+ Exchange

Erasmus+ Exchange

Erasmus is a student exchange programme funded by the European Commission. The Erasmus+ exchange enables students at our Erasmus+ partner universities to spend one or two semesters studying at Abertay University.

Over 3 million students from 33 countries have participated in Erasmus since the programme began in 1987. Erasmus+ enables you to experience life in Scotland, meet students from all over the world and improve your English language skills (you may even qualify for an Erasmus+ grant to help finance your exchange).

If you have any questions about Erasmus+, please email international@abertay.ac.uk

Application deadlines:

  • 15 May 2020 for full year and semester 1 2020/21
  • 15 October 2020 for semester 2 2020/21

Late applications are welcome depending on availability.

Who can apply for an Erasmus+ exchange?

You can apply if you have been nominated for an Erasmus+ exchange at Abertay by one of Abertay's Erasmus+ partner institutions. If your home university is not one of our Erasmus+ partners, you can still apply to study at Abertay as a free mover through our EU Visiting Student Programme. Please contact us for further details.

When can I study at Abertay?

You are welcome to apply for either one semester (term) or the full year. Semester 1 usually starts at the end of August/beginning of December and mid/late December, Semester 2 starts in early January and ends in early May.

Please see our Academic Calendar for exact term dates.

Costs and financial support

As an Erasmus+ student you are not required to pay tuition fees. You may also be eligible for an Erasmus+ student mobility grant. Please inquire with the International Office at your home university for further information.

Dundee is an affordable student city with the cost of living estimated at 12% below the UK average.

What can I study?

Please visit our Incoming Students Course Offer page, which details the different subject pathways available to you.

You will need to select 1 pathway, relevant to the semester that you plan to come to Abertay. In the application you will select this pathway, and then be able to choose any other options as indicated on the pathway.

These subject pathways are based on the studies of full time Abertay students, and hence are likely to fit in with the timetable. We are not able to guarantee taking modules from different pathways or years, as these often result in timetable clashes which are not allowed.

Timetables are announced a few weeks before the start of teaching so, unfortunately, we are unable to guarantee whether a certain combination of modules will be feasible at the time of application.

Do I receive academic recognition and credit?

You will receive a transcript of records which lists the modules you have completed at Abertay and the credits and grades achieved. Abertay uses the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). One SCQF credit point is equivalent to 0.5 ECTS, so a full workload of 30 ECTS per semester equates to 60 SCQF credit points.

Please check with the International Office at your home university for information on credit transfer requirements. You will need to complete an Erasmus+ Learning Agreement from your home university and get this signed by both your home university and Abertay in order to be able to transfer our credits.

Please note that as an Erasmus+ student, you are not eligible to graduate with an Abertay degree.

How to apply

Applications for the 2020/21 academic year (1st semester and full year exchange) will open on 1st April 2020, following the nomination deadline. The deadline to complete your application is 15th May 2020.

Details of the application form will be updated here by the end of February.

Students must be nominated by the international/study abroad office of their home university by 1st April 2020. Please contact your international/study abroad office and ask them to nominate you.

What happens after I apply?

We aim to take a decision on your application within 2 weeks. We will advise you of our decision by e-mail.

If you are given an offer, you will be issued with a unique student number. This number, which you will keep for the duration of your studies at Abertay, allows you to access the part of our website which contains details of registration and enrolment. This information and other details will also be e-mailed to you.

All international students are invited to attend an International Student Welcome event and orientation programme before the start of teaching. For more information on this and advice on how to prepare for your stay in Dundee, please see our International Guide.

Accommodation

Once you are have accepted our offer, you will be able to apply for University accommodation. We offer a range of choices within walking distance of our city centre campus.
