Biography

Denise Martin has been Professor of Criminology at Abertay University since 2019.  Prior to this she worked at several institutions including the Open University, UWS, University of Brighton and Middlesex University.  Her main research interests are around policing and penology.  She has led and been involved in various research projects and evaluations in the field of policing including evaluations of Police Scotland’s National Child Abuse Investigation Unit and Prevention First a partnership initiative aimed at reducing violence and anti-social behaviour. She has worked with a range of agencies, including the Home Office, Scottish Prison Service, Police Scotland, Mayors Office for Policing and Crime and National Police Chiefs Council.  She has been the Associate Director of the Education and Leadership Network for the Scottish Institute of Police Research since 2016.  Between 2018 and 2019, she was Academic Director of a major project on police learning and development at the OU. She has published three edited collections and numerous articles and contributed to several reports on policing matters.  She is a member of the ESC Police Working Group and a member of a specialist group on Education in Law Enforcement and Public Health within the Global Association of Law enforcement and Public Health.  Her main area of expertise, are police organisational change, police professionalism, policing education and leadership.
