PHATS goes large !

Kelly returnes to Belgium for more POP analysis

26 April 2017

Part of Kelly's job involves measuring the pollutants we find in seal fat. To do this she works over at the University of Liege with our collaborator, Gauthier Eppe. For the next month she'll be extracting the pollutants from the fat tissue and identifying what's there. When she returns we'll be able to match that information to the data we have about those animals' ability to gain fat when suckling and lose it when fasting. We'll also match it to the metabolic data we have from the explant experiments to find out if more polluted fat has lower rates of fat release, altered gene expression or changes to the proteins the cells make.  Kelly loves going to Belgium because they have fantastic analytical chemistry equipment and amazing macaroons!
