Victoria Henderson

BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering

Graduate profile

Your route to Abertay was a slightly unusual one, can you tell us about it?

Well, I was a qualified nurse and I decided to completely change my career. I was ex-army and I liked engineering so Civil Engineering seemed like the obvious choice.

I came to Abertay in my third year after two years at Dundee & Angus College, and here I am, graduating!

Why did you decide to change career?

I decided that nursing wasn’t for me. I thought I should change career at the age of 38, while I still felt young enough to do so.

I’d been nursing for 10 years qualified, but I’m glad I’ve taken this chance.

What did your family think?

At first they asked me if I was sure, if I really wanted to do this! But they’ve supported me, they’ve been amazing.

How do you feel to be graduating?

Tired, but successful. It’s been well worth it though, and I’m looking forward to getting out in the big wide world of work.

What were the highlights of your time at Abertay?

Meeting my course-mates and tutors. I think I’ve made some lifelong friends.

What’s next for you?

Getting a job as a Civil Engineer! I’d also like to do a Masters degree in the future, but that’s not something I’m planning to do right away.
