I’m a Lab Manager for VWR, which is a company that provides support services for other labs. Whenever they get us in, it’s mainly to deal with things which aren’t to do with the core science. It means scientists can spend all their time working on the things they’ve trained for.
I’m currently working in Macclesfield and I’m working in the HTS department. We’re at the very start of the drug development process and we develop cancer treatments.
What I mainly do in the office is cost save, I delegate and help people when they’re struggling. if they haven’t got the time, space or equipment they come to me and I help with that.
Previously, I was working for Source Bioscience. It’s the kind of place where they put a lot of responsibility on you very quickly and you either sink or swim. Luckily for me I managed to do quite well and they put more responsibility on me. I had three labs that I was managing.
A job agency approached me after seeing my LinkedIn profile and said they thought I’d be a good fit at VWR. I went for an interview and managed to get the job, which I was quite thrilled with.
Abertay gave me the tools to get to where I needed to go.Patrick Murray | VWR | Laboratory Manager
It gave me the tools to get to where I needed to go. It was a very lab based degree, which is very useful in today’s market. You can have all the qualifications in the world, but if you don’t have that experience not many people will be interested.
It gave me a good footing and good basic skills.
The tutors were always very friendly and approachable. Even after university, I could always get in contact with them and they were always happy to help.
It was a great place. I worked in the union while I was there and had a great circle of friends. I was never bored and was always meeting new people.
