I currently work for the Bone Marrow Donor Programme in Singapore. After almost seven years of working for the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Registry in London, I had acquired a rather niche skillset and realised I may be of use to other similar organisations.
I therefore made the move to Singapore where I now manage two very different teams: the patient team who help doctors in Singapore and Malaysia find donors for their patients in need of a stem cell transplant, and the donor team who call the donors who have been matched and guide them through the whole donation process.
Very important. In fact, between finishing exams and graduating I was interviewed for my first graduate job in science and medical publishing. The day after my graduation ball, I was offered it! Obviously I accepted; even in my hungover state I understood it was a fantastic opportunity!
My memories of Abertay itself will always be of its approachable, friendly staff and students from all walks of life – a real mixed bag!Mel Smith | Bone Marrow Donor Programme
Dundee is my hometown and, to be honest, when I was deciding where to study for the second time around as a mature student, it was the easiest option for me financially. Dundee is a small, friendly city and a fun place to be a student. If you're nervous at all about student life and whether you've picked the right university or city, don't be! Abertay is a great place to study and Dundee is a fun city to be in during those times. Oh and you should probably try a deep fried Mars bar...
