Abertay’s Civil Engineering Design Competition aims to extend the ethos of new perspectives, bringing people together, and inspiring creativity for Scotland’s secondary school pupils and college students—which means we’d like to encourage as many as possible get involved and have fun!
To capitalise on Dundee’s rejuvenation, Dundee City Council would like to add an attraction to the growing portfolio of the city’s east end. The local council is accepting tenders for a theme/leisure park on an abandoned site in this area.
College students and secondary school pupils in years 4-6 will work in small groups and conceptually design a ‘Dundee’ themed leisure/theme park, including a detailed design for a main attraction. In following the design brief, each group will have a design which, in theory, gives unrestricted views of the city, whilst also complying with the specified requirements of the project.
All submissions will be shortlisted and the finalists invited to Abertay University in Dundee to build their designs within our bespoke engineering labs. The winning team will be decided by our judging panel of BEng/MEng placement partners, who will be present on the day.
This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils to meet current engineers from a range of organisations and to meet the team behind the TOP Civil Engineering programme in Scotland!

“At BEAR Scotland we recognise that our business relies on schools, colleges and universities providing young people with an insight into the varied opportunities that a career in civil engineering offers. We endeavour to support academia by maintaining our long-standing partnership with Abertay University, offering third-year students placements on the civil engineer industrial placement module. We also provide student summer placements, scholarships and offer advice and support to innovative engagement projects with schools.
Abertay University’s Civil Engineering Design Competition for Scottish Schools brings young people together to work in teams to develop innovative designs that work from both an engineering and aesthetic perspective. Above all, the competition demonstrates that civil engineering is not only about the engineering solution or look of the building; it is about the individual, the team ethos, and the approach the team has adopted. By the end of the competition, young people have a greater understanding the many and varied opportunities that civil engineering has to offer as a long-term career.”
