Abertay achieves race equality charter mark
Abertay is proud to announce that we are the first University in Scotland to receive a Race Equality Charter Mark.
A statement issued today by the Equality Challenge Unit (ECU), who work to support equality and diversity for staff and students in higher education institutions across the UK, announced Abertay’s success in achieving the Race Equality Charter Mark Bronze award.
The Race Equality Charter Mark aims to improve the representation, progression and success of minority ethnic staff and students within higher education.
Abertay began the application process in January following a framework set out by ECU to identify and self-reflect on institutional and cultural barriers standing in the way of minority ethnic staff and students. Initiatives and solutions for action were then developed by the University’s Race Equality Charter Mark Self-Assessment Team (SAT) led by Director of Student Services James Nicholson, who said:
‘The process of applying for the award involved all areas of the University from lecturers and students, to strategic planning, teaching and learning. Abertay strives to be an inclusive and open organisation and our Race Equality Action Plan commits the University to further embed race equality within the curriculum which will directly benefit our students.’
Principal and Vice-Chancellor, Nigel Seaton said ‘I am very pleased indeed that our work on equality and diversity has been recognised by the Race Equality Charter Mark. The award process is a very demanding one, and our submission involved staff and students from across the University - the ‘Abertay family’ approach. I’m very proud of what our staff and students have achieved.’
Institutions applying for the Race Equality Charter Mark are expected to start at Bronze level and progress to Silver depending on level of progress.
