Donner and Blitzened: the Christmas cocktail everyone's talking about22 December 2014
With Santa no longer able to take his customary tipple due to the new drink driving limit in Scotland - and with Rudolph only ever having been offered a carrot - the food innovation team at Abertay University felt it was time to start a new tradition.
They challenged their consumer panel to come up with a cocktail that would appeal to Santa, Rudolph and his pals, and now the Donner and Blitzened is the talk of the town amongst the reindeer of Lapland.
Made with a perfect blend of Glayva, vodka, cranberry juice and carrot juice - topped with whipped cream and a sprinkling of cinnamon - the thought of it is sure to speed them on their merry way as they make their mad dash through the skies on Christmas Eve.
Jennifer Bryson - Food Innovation @ Abertay’s Business Development Manager - explains the thinking behind the new invention:
“To thank our consumer panellists - who have worked extremely hard for us this year, giving us their valued opinions on a range of new products that we’ve been developing for businesses throughout Scotland - we ran a competition asking them to come up with a cocktail recipe for Rudolph.
“As they’ve got excellent taste and imagination, we knew they’d come up with something good, and that’s how the Donner and Blitzened was born.
“Although carrot juice is perhaps not to everyone’s taste, we’ve spoken to Santa, and he told us that the whole team can’t wait to taste it on Tuesday night when they get home.”
If you would like to make your own version of the Donner and Blitzened, the ingredients are as follows:
• Cranberry juice
• Carrot juice
• Red grape on a cocktail stick
• Whipped cream on top
• Sprinkling of cinnamon
