BAFTA-winning student game published by Channel 415 August 2014
Size DOES Matter, a frantic music-fuelled arcade game and winner of the BAFTA Ones to Watch Award, has been published by Channel 4.
The game was one of the three main winners at Abertay University’s Dare to be Digital contest last year, securing one of the exclusive nominations for the BAFTA Ones to Watch Award. The Ones to Watch Award is a unique recognition of promising games industry talent.
Size DOES Matter is a rhythm action game that challenges players to manoeuvre a resizable block through gates in time to electronic music.
Using simple touch-screen controls, one thumb controlling size, and the other controlling position, players must resize the block to progress through the maze, earn points and unlock new tracks and levels.
Professor Louis Natanson, Head of the School of Arts, Media and Computer Games at Abertay University, said: “Abertay University is committed to developing the highly skilled professionals the computer games industry needs to grow and thrive, both through our degree courses and initiatives like Dare to be Digital.
“Working with partners like Channel 4 helps us give up-and-coming game developers opportunities to massively accelerate their careers, by helping to set up companies and launch successful games.”
Colin Macdonald, Games Commissioning Editor at Channel 4, said: “I’m delighted to be releasing Size DOES Matter a year after it wowed the audience and judges at Abertay University’s Dare ProtoPlay festival.
“Year on year, Abertay continues to do remarkable work showing students what is needed to build creative, exciting, inspiring games.”
The latest round of Dare to be Digital closed last weekend with the Dare ProtoPlay festival, which attracted over 13,000 visitors across four days.
Channel 4 also supported a £25,000 prize at Dare ProtoPlay for the third year in a row, taking a student team and mentoring them to establish a company and publish their game.
Size DOES Matter is available to download now at the Apple App Store and on Google Play Store and Amazon App Store from August 21.
Each level is played to a different track by electronic music artists including Savant, Chipzel and Rymdreglage. Gamers can also challenge their friends to become king of the Size DOES Matter leaderboard.
