Pixel Pushers exhibition reveals secrets of computer game artists
A new exhibition celebrating the hidden work of computer games artists opens today (Thursday 27 March) at Abertay University’s Hannah Maclure Centre.
Work from artists linked to Dundee will be on show at the Pixel Pushers exhibition, including the team at 4J Studios, creators of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition, and personal work from Ian McQue, Rockstar North Assistant Art Director.
The exhibition will reveal how digital artists work, showing that the artists’ unique vision and style is the driving force behind their art, with technology simply another brush in their palette.
Clare Brennan, Hannah Maclure Centre Curator, said: “The artistic and creative qualities of digital artists can be easily overlooked, either because people see their work as purely technical – or that somehow it is created automatically by a computer.
“With the new exhibition at Abertay University we’re revealing the secrets of how digital artists really work, and showing how they draw upon the same wide and varied sources as traditional and fine artists.
“Whether it’s for illustration, modelling, games or books, what digital artists create is undoubtedly art, and we want to celebrate the artistic skill and incredible creativity that has come out of Dundee over the years.”
The show runs weekdays from Friday March 28 – Friday May 9 2014, 10am-5pm, in the Hannah Maclure Centre gallery on the top floor of Abertay University’s Student Centre, Bell Street, Dundee.
Alongside the exhibition there will be a programme of talks and masterclasses delivered by the artists themselves.
Alongside work from 4J Studios, the artists showcasing their individual work are:
- Ian McQue is Assistant Art Director at Rockstar North, as well as an established concept artist in his own right. He originally attended Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art where he studied illustration.
- Alex Ronald is an acclaimed comics and games artist. His work in the exhibition includes covers from the famous British comics 2000 AD and Judge Dredd Megazine. Alex started his career in games at VIS, whose headquarters were in Dundee.
- Chris Goodswen is a character artist who, after completing his MProf in Games Development at Abertay University several years ago, quickly rose to the heights of character artist at Crytek in Frankfurt - arguably the most technically demanding games development studio in Europe today.
- Gareth Hector is a games and concept artist who worked for Visual Science in Dundee for several years after establishing his skills at Red Lemon in Glasgow. Gareth recently exhibited his work at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia, but is more commonly found working for the highly respected Axis Animation studio in Glasgow.
- Ken Fee is currently the programme tutor of the MProf in Games Development at Abertay University, but started his professional career as an artist at DMA Design. A games and concept art contractor in addition to his academic work, Ken now mostly concentrates on work for magazine and books.

The Hannah Maclure Centre was created through a bequest which was gifted to Abertay University by the family of Hannah Maclure, an exceptional student who had a passion for the arts.
The centre, which was opened in her honour in 2005, encompasses her passion for art and enriches the university experience for students, staff and local people.
