Pupils learn business skills in Scotherbs and Abertay University challenge14 May 2013
The winners of a new business challenge set by Scotherbs and the University of Abertay Dundee were announced this week at Morgan Academy in Dundee.
Over the past month, S3 pupils learnt real-life business skills with finance and marketing lecturers from Abertay University’s Dundee Business School and experts from Scotherbs - one of the largest fresh herb suppliers in the UK.
The Morgan Academy pupils were also supported by Abertay University business students.
The pupils were divided into teams and challenged to plan a promotional campaign for Scotherbs, which required market research with different customer age groups, designing packaging and promotional steps, calculating the costs of the packaging and promotion, and suggesting sales channels for the business.
The four-week challenge culminated on Monday with four of the teams pitching their ideas to an expert panel from Scotherbs and Abertay University.
Each team was required to design two posters to communicate their work – one showing their recommended promotional campaign, and the other outlining costs, routes to market and the market research undertaken.
The winning team was Fresh Scots, which consisted of Sarah Donaldson, Luke Harrison, Aisha Khaliq, Rebecca Laxy, Gregor McLeod and Kevin Mitchell.
Helen Smith from Abertay University’s Dundee Business School said:
“The pupils from Morgan Academy worked very hard over the four weeks, learning how the Scotherbs business works, and each team produced some excellent ideas.
“It was a difficult task to choose the winning poster, as we were highly impressed with the standard of work produced by all the pupils and with their engagement with the project.
“We decided on Fresh Scots in the end though, who provided a well thought out concept of incorporating sauce sachets into products, using triangular packaging and creating a finger puppet whose hair varied depending on the type of herb being promoted.
“As we’ve seen at Abertay University with our students, setting a real-life challenge which addresses a genuine company’s business opportunities and challenges is an incredible motivator for learning.”
Elaine Saunders, Principal Teacher of Business Education at Morgan Academy, said:
“This has been an excellent opportunity for our young people to develop their skills for life, learning and work through a real business scenario. It has allowed our S3 students to transfer their Curriculum for Excellence learning experiences and develop skills such as working with others, problem solving and leadership.”
Scotherbs is based in the Carse of Gowrie to the west of Dundee. The company employs over 120 staff and deals with customers in the supermarket, wholesale and food manufacturing sectors which includes Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Marks & Spencer.
