Dundee school pupils complete fifth year of Abertay mentoring scheme17 April 2013
Secondary school pupils from Dundee’s Braeview Academy have completed a three-month mentoring scheme at the University of Abertay Dundee.
Now in its fifth year, the ‘Supporting Able Pupils’ project gives school children a taste of what life is like at university by encouraging them to develop independent research, study and team-working skills.
14 pupils took part this year, with each carrying out a research project on a subject of their own choice.
Topics included “Football League Structures”, “Snakes”, “The Olympic Games”, “Nail Polish”, and “The British Army”.
Each pupil was allocated a student mentor who had volunteered to help guide them through the process of completing their project.
All pupils also received coaching on presentation skills, ahead of an event in March where they had to present their project and talk about what they had learned.
This week, the pupils received awards from the University in recognition of their hard work and achievements.
Mr Graeme Wallace, Principal Teacher of Guidance at Braeview Academy, said:
“Being able to go to Abertay, meet students, and carry out their own independent research projects is a really valuable experience for our pupils, as the transition from school to university can be daunting.
“The ‘Supporting Able Pupils’ project gives them the chance to develop new skills and experience what it’s like being responsible for their own learning, which will stand them in good stead if they choose to go on and further their studies at university.”
Rona Whittet, Student Recruitment Officer at Abertay University, said:
“This is the fifth year we’ve run the mentoring scheme, and it’s been going from strength to strength. The pupils gain a real insight into what life is like at a university, not only from the research projects they carry out, but also from speaking with their mentors, who know from personal experience what it’s like being at school and not knowing what to expect from higher education.
“All the Braeview pupils put a lot of hard work into the projects they presented, and we warmly congratulate each and every one of them on their achievement.”
Lesley Parker-Hamilton, one of the mentors, explains why she got involved:
"I took part in this project to spend some time with teenagers of this city and to gain an insight into secondary school approaches to academia. It was a valuable and enjoyable experience."
