My degree was very important in getting my financial services career up and running. I was fortunate to win one of five graduate trainee places with Clydesdale Bank PLC the year I graduated.
My current job is as a Construction Finance Specialist for Bibby Financial Services. This involves lending money to the Construction Industry across Scotland, Northern Ireland and North East England. It is quite a specialist field at the moment as there are quite a lot of risks inherent with the contracts between sub contractors (my target market) and main contractors. The contracts in place can make it difficult for lenders, such as ourselves, to get back the money we lend. It's a field that most banks won't get involved in as a result.
My advice for students/graduates is to use your uniqueness, as well as your degree, to get that job you've always wanted. For me it was the extra curricular things I did at Abertay that helped me massively when applying for Clydesdale Bank PLC graduate traineeship. This included sports and social events because these activities developed my life skills including communication, public speaking etc. These skills gave me an edge in the recruitment process when I was competing against others who also had a good degree.
