Women in Engineering

Victoria Cousin - BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering

Victora Cousin is studying for a BSc in Civil Engineering at Abertay.  During her placement year at Balfour Beatty she had the opportunity to work on the Dundee Railway Station, Hotel and Plaza project.  She has set her sights on a career in the construction industry.

Why engineering at Abertay?

Abertay University is one of the few Universities which offer a student placement as part of the Civil Engineering Course.  The student placement is a great way of gaining work experience. It also opens up opportunities for the future by providing connections and references in the work place.

Where do you see yourself in the future?

I enjoy the construction side of the industry and I believe that this is the area of work I would like to go in to initially.  I am currently in the process of applying for a graduate job with Balfour Beatty Construction Services UK.   Longer term, I would like to be an experienced Civil Engineer, at a respected level of Site Agent or even Project Manager.

What did you enjoy most about studying at Abertay?

The 12 week student placement has been the highlight of my time at Abertay. It provided real-life work experience and the opportunity to be part of the day to day running of a construction site. I spent my placement with Balfour Beatty working on the Dundee Railway Station, Hotel and Plaza project and I am currently on a summer work placement with the company.  I have thoroughly enjoyed working here.  The placement has given me a deeper understanding of the materials I studied in my course, through working in real  engineering working environment.

Who do you consider to be inspirational women in STEM?

I would consider Dr Rebecca Wade to be an Inspirational Woman in Science as she is always positive and motivational in her role as a lecturer at Abertay.  Rebecca is confident in herself and this influences others to be confident also.  She is involved in many of the Women in Engineering and Science Events and I think she is a great example of a successful woman within the industry.

Any advice for students thinking about studying engineering?

Engineers are currently in high demand so there are plenty of jobs available.  The Civil Engineering Degree is a great foundation to a very wide range of careers within Engineering.

I would also highly recommend studying at Abertay University as the placement has been a huge bonus to the course and one which not many other Universities offer.
