Why Study Abertay's BA (Hons) in Social Care Management?

Our Social Care Management degree gives you the essential skills and professional knowledge to work as a manager in the diverse social care sector. The course reflects the growing demands and opportunities in social care, allowing you to develop on-the-job skills and gain a degree at the same time.

This degree is designed for people with a relevant HNC, so you’ll join in year two and study for three years. The course meets the requirements of the SVQ Care Services Leadership and Management at Level 10. It is approved by the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC), find the full details in 'How the course works' below.

We’ll develop your social care knowledge and management skills, so you’re equipped manage a team who are meeting the complex needs of people in diverse and often vulnerable situations. You'll:

  • Develop an in-depth knowledge of social care provision and policy in Scotland.
  • Gain professional leadership and management skills.
  • Apply your learning in real world situations through work placements.

Teaching is mostly online, with one day per fortnight on campus. This means if you’re already working in the sector you can upskill and work at the same time. You’ll learn from real life experiences via guest lecturers and case studies coming from social workers, charge nurses, voluntary sector service managers and more.

Getting out into the workplace is an essential part of this practical degree. The second year weekly work placements will give you the confidence to thrive when faced with professional challenges.  You’ll graduate with essential management skills, such as the ability to organise and lead a team, communicate sensitively and effectively, and manage projects and information efficiently.

This degree is the ideal choice for newcomers to the sector, current care professionals who want to move into their first management role, as well as existing managers looking to upskill by gaining a degree. We aim to help you develop a rewarding career in social care management.

Brief description

Theories for practice requires an understanding of the variety of approaches underpinning the methods of intervention used in health and social care settings - this combined with the development of understanding of psychological and sociological theoretical approaches.

Module content:

  • Person-Child Approach to Practice All content is grounded in person/child–centred approach to practice. You will study: Communication, support methods, inclusive and person-centred practice, advocacy, community work and development, life story work and life review, family therapy and systemic practice, task-centred social work
     
  • Social Science Theories An Introduction to Social Science theories which support development in communication or explain barriers to it. Behavioural theory; cognitive theory; cognitive behavioural therapy; Humanistic theory and the work of Carl Rogers, some basic counselling theory, and skills.

Brief description

This module will examine what constitutes health and being healthy and provide an overview of the theories and policies aimed at promoted health and well-being.

Module content:

  • What is Health and Well-being? Examines the various definitions of health and wellbeing and encourages you to reflect on your own definition of health. Different approaches to understanding health will also be discussed including Health and Illness Continuum, Western Scientific Approach, Holistic approach including WHO. This will be contextualised using an appropriate sociological or psychological theory
  • Health Promotion Health promotion You will study several approaches to this behavioural, educational, political, client centred, community development and look at how successful these are in reality.
  • Barriers to Health Barriers to health and wellbeing including inequalities in health. You will discuss the findings of the Black report and the Marmot review and evaluate some of the most recent government initiatives to improve health outcomes in Scotland for groups and individuals. 
  • Health demographics In this topic, you will examine demographic change and its influence on general health, attitudes to smoking or alcohol, diet, caring roles, ageing population, immunisations, social media. inequalities in health.

Brief description

This module builds on students’ existing knowledge of human resource management and develops their understanding of HRM theory and practice.

Module content:

  • Introduction to HRM Theoretical perspectives to HRM; practical approaches to HRM
  • Context and HRM National, international, occupational, organisational and individual contexts of HRM in theory and in practice
  • Strategic HRM Introduction to strategic human resource management; ‘best fit’ and ‘best practice’ approaches
  • HRM, work and wellbeing Fair work; dignity at work; mental health and stress at work; the benefits and challenges of flexibility
  • HRM, equality and diversity Inequalities in the labour market and in the workplace; managing diverse workforce
  • Managing conflict in the workplace Conflict in the employment relationship; misbehaviour, discipline and grievance procedures; bullying and harassment; disputes
  • Contemporary HRM trends and future challenges Continuity and change in work and employment; gig economy; (ir)responsible HRM

Brief description

This module will use contemporary writing to evaluate the aspects around legislation and ethics in care services. How these have evolved and changed over time.

Module content:

  • Care support models How care service delivery has changed over time from the medical model to the social inclusive models. How legislation has changed over time to reflect this, both from a UK and Scottish Government prospective
  • Needs V Wants Explores how different the concept of care needs are interpreted by groups of service users. Consider values, inclusion, inequalities and changing multi-cultural societal needs.
  • Human rights Investigate the legislation, which supports this, and how this is reflected in service provisions.
  • The voices of those using the services Explore different age groups, various conditions that limit those affected to make decisions and how services ensure services meet their needs.
  • Ethical issues for the future Discuss ethical issues, which will could look at areas around- embryonic stem cell research, ageing population and life expectancy, abortion laws, right to die, use of medication such as cannabis and hallucinogenic substances, mental health and genetic modification.

Brief description

This module will look at current practice around the concept of risk management in health and social care settings, reviewing best practice models and failures in the protection of vulnerable service users.

Module content:

  • Hazards and risks – how are these managed within the workplace. Hazards and Risks in health care settings- The legislation in Scottish services and how this has evolved in regards to health and safety in the workplace. Changes made by the Scottish parliament due to failures.
  • Protecting those at risk How the legislation on child and adult protection has evolved and the implications for services due to this.
  • Human rights Explore how the rights and choices to be free to make decisions about risks can cause conflict between those in need of care and care givers.
  • Assessing and managing risks How to carry out the process of risk assessment and review. Current requirements in accident reporting and RIDDOR.
  • Partnership working Explore how working with other agencies can help with risk management and maintain services users rights to decision making.
  • Supporting others to understand risks Models of staff training to ensure those working in services are aware of aspects of risk assessment and their roles in reporting.
  • Review of failures to protect those in care. Learning from failure, looking at cases from care services where risks have been inadequately address and individuals have been harmed.

Brief description

This module provides an introduction to the organisation of social care in Scotland and the social and political influences on its development.

Module content:

  • Organisation of Social Care in Scotland Provide a comprehensive overview of the social care system in Scotland and will consider some of the current challenges it faces.
  • The Political Influences on Care. Examines the ideology behind social care and the organisation of the care system in Scotland.
  • Social Influences on the care system Will discuss the changing demographics of the Scottish population and their implications for the care system. Will discuss the changing nature of the family, levels of poverty and inequality, chronic ill-health and the aging population, and disabilities. These will be examined in more detail in the module SOC232 Diversity and Difference in Social Care.

Brief description

This module provides an overview of diversity and difference in the social care sector and an appreciation of the relationship between race, gender, social class, poverty and social exclusion and its impact on social care and welfare.

Module content:

  • Diversity & Difference in Social Care Will examine the diversity of those in care and the issues related to age, Disability, gender, ethnicity, Class, and Sexuality.
  • Types of discrimination Examines at different types of discrimination that will be encountered both in social care settings and wider society.
  • Responding to discrimination This section will examine how you can identify and confront discriminatory practices and attitudes in social care settings.

The context and dimensions of managing across cultures, convergence and divergence theories, and classification of the different approaches to managing in different countries.
  • Managing in the Anglo−Saxon countries Analysing the Anglo−saxon approach to management; Managing in the USA and the UK.
  • Managing in Asian Countries Effects of Confucianism, Communism and economic dynamism on management and organisation in East Asia countries; Managing in China, Japan and South Korea.
  • Managing in Western European Countries Analysing the Francophone, the Germanic and other European models of management. The impact of the EU integration and expansion on employment and labour markets. Managing in France and Germany. 
  • Managing in Less Developed Countries From colonialism to dependency: the impact of international trade, transfer of knowledge and technology, ideologies and religous beliefs on management (mismanagement) and organisation in less developed countries. Managing in selected African and Middle−Eastern countries.
  • Contemporary issues of cross−cultural management Global ethics and global labour markets: Gender, race, disability and age concerns. International organizations' responses to changing demographics; International organizations' responses to skills shortages. International approaches to managing diversity; and the use of IT in International HRM.

Brief description

In this module you will develop the skills to assess, analyse and evaluate the impacts of the policy making process to organisations business in terms of the economic and broader social contributions it makes. In addition it will help provide a foundation for you to understand the important and complex role that government plays with all businesses, including businesses focused on sustainability the effect of public policy on business, the factors that influence public policy, the different views of the relationship between business and government, and the occurrence of market failures and the role of public policy.

  • 1. What is public policy PP is the process by which governments translate their political vision and ideologies into programmes and actions to deliver outcomes and desired changes in the real world. 
  • The policy process Explore the foundations, importance and goals of public policy by exploring the stages of the policy cycle and the political factors that influence each stage
  • Theories of power and the policy process Apply the theory learned from the course such as, Rational Actor Theory and Institutional theory and apply it to real-world policy case studies
  • How organisations shape and impact on policy Explain how organisations and industry representatives such as lobbyist can inform, persuade, pressure and influence governments, policy makers and public policy and to help serve their interest
  • Public policy and the operation of organisations Explain how public policies and government influence markets for sustainable businesses; Understand why public policy is important to sustainable business and business more generally; Discuss the key influencers and impacts this relationship of public policy and why public policymaking does not always serve the public interest

How the course works

This degree is designed for people with a relevant HNC, so you’ll join in year two and study for three years. The course meets the requirements of the SVQ Care Services Leadership and Management at Level 10.

Teaching and assessment

You'll learn through a combination of online lectures, practical classes, seminars, tutorials, and independent study.

You’ll be assessed using a variety of methods. These include examinations and class tests, practical work placements, essays, presentations, research projects and case studies.

SSSC Approval

The Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) have approved the BA (Hons) Social Care Management as meeting specific parts of the register for managers and supervisors in social services.

Managers require two qualifications for registration. They must have a practice and a management qualification. This BA (Hons) Social Care Management is an accepted management qualification for all management register parts (except the Day Care of Children Service). 

Supervisors also require two qualifications for registration. They must have a practice and a supervisory qualification. This is an accepted supervisory qualification for all supervisory registered parts across adult services. It is not an approved practice qualification for managers or supervisors.

Entry Requirements

Please note: All applicants must have passes in English and Maths - National 5 English grade C or GCSE grade C/4 or equivalent. National 5 ESOL is accepted in lieu of National 5 English. National 5 Lifeskill Maths/Applications of Maths/National 4 Maths/National 4 Lifeskill Maths or Chemistry, Biology or Physics IS accepted in lieu of Maths. GCSE Maths or numerate subject such as Science, Biology, Chemistry at grade C/4.

English Language Requirements

All courses at Abertay University are taught in English. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you meet our English language requirements. For BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing, the English language requirement is higher than other undergraduate courses. 

IELTS - overall score of 7.0 with no band lower than 7.0 or an equivalent qualification.

Please note: All applicants must attend for interview and, if successful, must undergo health screening and criminal records checks. Enrolled students are required to make an annual declaration of good health and good character. The University must affirm this declaration before registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is possible.


English Language Requirements

All courses at Abertay University are taught in English. If your first language is not English, you will need to demonstrate that you meet our English language requirements. For BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing, the English language requirement is higher than other undergraduate courses. 

IELTS - overall score of 7.0 with no band lower than 7.0 or an equivalent qualification.

You do not need to prove your knowledge of English language if you are a national of certain countries. Please see English Language Requirements for the full list of accepted qualifications and further details.

Support for Ukrainian students

We're keen to offer help to Ukrainian students who may wish to transfer from their existing institution in Ukraine or to register with us as new students for intake in September 2022-3. There will be no tuition fees charged for the duration of the degree programme, as those with refugee status are treated as ‘Home/Scottish’ students and will also have access to the Student Awards Agency for Scotland bursary and student loans. An award of £8,000 for postgraduate students from Canada, China (including Hong Kong), India, Japan, Pakistan and USA.
