Testing & Advice

About Test & Protect & following the FACTS

It's crucial that we all follow the Test and Protect procedures. Here is some useful information to help you. Some of it is specific to Abertay, so please read carefully.

If you develop any of the symptoms of coronavirus you should self-isolate at home immediately and arrange a test. There is a reminder about symptoms and self-isolation below.

If you are on campus when you first experience symptoms, please go straight back to your accommodation.

If you are self-isolating, please email the Advisory service on advisory@abertay.ac.uk, so we can support you through this period.

To book a test, visit NHSinform.scot or call 0800 028 2816 if you can't get online.

What is the Test & Protect procedure?

Test and Protect is Scotland's way of putting into practice the test, trace, isolate, support strategy. It is designed to prevent the spread of coronavirus by:

  • Identifying cases of coronavirus through testing.
  • Tracing the people who may have become infected by spending time in close contact with them.
  • Supporting those close contacts to self-isolate, so that if they have the disease they are less likely transmit it to others.

Visit the Test and Protect section on the NHS Inform website for full details.

See the Test and Protect information in other languages on the NHS Inform website.

The symptoms - a reminder

  • A high temperature – this means you feel hot to touch on your chest or back (you do not need to measure your temperature).
  • A new, continuous cough – this means coughing a lot for more than an hour, or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours (if you usually have a cough, it may be worse than usual).
  • A loss or change to your sense of smell or taste – this means you've noticed you cannot smell or taste anything, or things smell or taste different to normal.

To book a test visit NHSinform.scot or call 0800 028 2816 if you can’t get online. If you are self-isolating or about to be, please email advisory@abertay.ac.uk so we can support you through this period.

How do I self-isolate? 3 Key Steps

  1. If you have any coronavirus symptoms, immediately self-isolate and book a test right away at NHSinform.scot/test-and-protect. If you can’t get online, phone 0800 028 2816. If your symptoms get worse, call 111.

  2. If you test positive for coronavirus, NHS Scotland will ask you to share your recent close contacts, as they may be at risk. A close contact is someone who has been one metre from you for any length of time, or within two metres for 15 minutes or more.

  3. Self-isolate. If you are contacted by an NHS Scotland contact tracer, you will need to self-isolate for 14 days, and be offered a test if you develop symptoms.

Always remember the FACTS:

  • Face coverings

  • Avoid crowded places

  • Clean your hands regularly

  • Two metre distance

  • Self-isolate and book a test if you have symptoms
