Advice and arrangements for 2021/22

Whether you’re moving into Abertay-owned residences, private student halls, or a flat in the city, your safety is our main priority.

All of our accommodation buildings are set up in line with national Covid safety guidelines. Before you arrive, you will be provided with detailed guidance on:

  • cleaning and hygiene arrangements
  • rules on households and mixing with others within halls;
  • advice on self-isolation or quarantine arrangements for international students;
  • University support services

Staying Covid-safe in student accommodation

The national legal requirement to physically distance or restrict numbers of people in any setting has been removed. However, as new student households are formed, clinical advice states that student accommodation has an increased risk of higher transmission rates.

Therefore, to help minimise the risk of outbreaks within student accommodation, we would strongly recommend following Scottish Government advice and:

  • reduce contact for 10 days before travelling to Dundee;
  • take a PCR test no more than 48 hours before travel;
  • maintain distancing and good ventilation when mixing with other households;
  • avoid large gatherings of people indoors;
  • engage with regular LFD testing (kits will be provided);
  • self-isolate if displaying symptoms

What is the cleaning regime in student halls?

Residents are primarily responsible for cleaning and hygiene within individual flats.

Enhanced cleaning and inspections will take place in communal areas on a regular basis.

This includes:

  • Kitchens
  • Corridors/hallways
  • Shared shower and toilet facilities
  • Stairwells
  • External grounds and bin areas

Will I need to physically distance from my flatmates?

Once living in a student residence, you and your immediate flatmates are classed as one household and should follow all Scottish Government guidance for households. You don’t need to physically distance from one another and don't need to wear a face covering around each other, unless you want to.

Am I allowed to socialise with others living in student residences?

Government guidance beyond Level 0 has removed the national legal requirements to physically distance or restrict numbers of people in any setting. However, there is a higher risk of transmission within student accommodation, particularly as a significant number of residents will not be fully vaccinated by Term 1.

Therefore, to help minimise the risk of outbreaks within student accommodation, we would strongly recommend following Scottish Government advice and:

  • avoid large gatherings of people indoors;
  • if mixing with other households is unavoidable, try to maintain your distance and make sure indoor areas are well-ventilated;
  • engage with regular LFD testing (kits will be provided);
  • self-isolate if you test positive or start displaying symptoms

If I test positive for Covid-19, do my flatmates need to self-isolate too?

If you test positive for Covid-19, it is crucial that you self-isolate immediately to prevent transmission amongst others.

Beyond Level 0, the requirement of household members to self-isolate has changed, provided they are fully vaccinated, remain asymptomatic and have taken a negative PCR test.

If your flatmates have not been fully vaccinated, they must also self-isolate for 10 days, even on receipt of a negative PCR test.

The University will support you during any periods of self-isolation to ensure you have access to food, medicines and online learning materials, if you are able to continue your studies remotely.
