Welfare and wellbeing in sport

Here at Abertay we have a great deal of expertise in the area of welfare and wellbeing in sport.

It's crucial that all participants in sport should feel safe and included. But sometimes sports people feel threatened or excluded, often because of their background, age, sexual orientation or ability. Our aim is to help you remove those barriers. 


Our research has underpinned campaigns by the International Federation of Professional Footballers Associations (FIFPro) and English Institute of Sport, and has been commended in a House of Commons Debate on Sport in the UK.

This work is overseen by David Lavalle, the world's first Professor of Duty of Care in Sport who was appointed in 2017.

Why is sport important?

Sport plays a significant role in society due to its wide ranging benefits. These include

  • physical well-being
  • mental well-being
  • individual development
  • social and community development
  • economic development

The most crucial aspect of sport is the people involved in it.

This covers a very wide range - from elite athletes to people participating at a grassroots level, a coach or a competitive sports person, watching as a parent or fan, volunteering as an official or referee, working as an administrator or sport scientist or involved in some other capacity like running a club. 

However, as highlighted in Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson's Sport Duty of Care Review, sport needs to ensure that the wellbeing of it's people is always placed at it's core.

What is Sport Safetay about?

Sport Safetay is a free set of resources created by our students to support sports organisations. 

These free resources cover many sport-related issues including:

  1. Safeguarding
  2. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  3. Safety, Injury and Medical
  4. Transition
  5. Mental Health
  6. Representation of the Participant’s Voice
  7. Education

 Sport Safetay is supported through a User Liaison Group made up of people from across the sport sector who help curate the student resources.

Why work with our students?

The University recognises the need to educate the next generation of sports practitioners in this area. Welfare, wellbeing and duty of care in sport are integral parts of all our Sports degree programmes. These are the Abertay Attributes in action.

Through the help of Bell Street Ventures, students and former students can engage in consultancy work with businesses and organisations who need their expertise.

Mental health can be measured by your ability to cope with the normal stresses of life, work productively and be able to make a contribution to the community. The ability to learn from others and to develop psychologically and emotionally can also measure good mental health.

5 top tips for coaches on deselection for young elite footballers

Many professional football clubs worldwide have set up elite youth academies that aim to develop skillful and creative young players to potentially become professional football players in the future.

However, it has been discovered that 90% of the young players within the academy fail to make it as professionals. These players are released by the club through the deselection process, meaning that support is needed. This issue arises constantly for coaches.
