Intensive English for Academic Purposes Programme

This course is designed to prepare international students for their time at Abertay by providing intensive English tuition before commencing their studies.

Next Start Date: July

UCAS Code: Apply directly to the University

Duration: July 25 - August 26 2016

Introduction

Why choose the Intensive English for Academic Purposes (IEAP) programme?

Studying abroad is a fantastic but challenging experience. The course is designed to help you get the most from your time at Abertay by preparing you for your degree, helping you to familiarise yourself with the university and the city of Dundee - and of course, you’ll meet other international students.

Although some students are required to attend as a condition of their offer from the university, the Intensive English for Academic Purposes programme is recommended for all international students because of the benefits it provides.‌‎

What you study

What will I study?

There are 20 hours of classes a week.  Each class has a maximum of 14 students. Classes focus on developing the four skills:

  • Writing: including understanding and planning different assignments, using sources, avoiding plagiarism, and improving your accuracy.
  • Reading: strategies to help you to read academic books, journal articles and internet sources more effectively.
  • Listening: strategies for both formal settings such as lectures, and informal discussions and conversations.
  • Speaking: including giving presentations and taking part in seminars.

Successful study in the UK also involves other skills: critical thinking, independent learning, academic literacy and research skills.

Additionally, we aim to develop your language skills so you can communicate with confidence in and out of class.

How is the course assessed?

You will research and write an essay on a topic based on your degree subject; deliver an academic presentation; and undertake a research project as part of a group.

Class work and assignments will help you to develop the skills you need to do this.

Entry routes

A minimum of IELTS 5.5 or equivalent is required (with no single test score lower than 5.0).

Some degree courses may have specific language requirements- students intending to progress to these will need higher initial IELTS (or equivalent) scores.
