With 30 years of teaching degree-level nursing, Abertay has the experience you need to train as a nursing professional.

High levels of student support are integral to the nursing courses at Abertay, particularly when undertaking nursing placements – which could be in hospitals or community healthcare. Students will learn to care for people with long-term, complex needs, an area of work that can be hugely personally rewarding.

Nursing courses – mental health nursing

The nursing courses at Abertay include the BSc (Hons) Nursing and BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing, Both programmes are committed to developing students who can deliver high quality evidence-based care. We have excellent facilities, including our clinical skills lab and counselling skills clinic, where you will develop many of the skills you'll need for your practice placement.

Practice experience accounts for over half of the course in the first three years. Students can, if they wish, request request a placement outside Scotland and we have recently had students complete elements of practice in India, Ghana and Canada.

The focus of the BSc (Hons) Mental Health Nursing is on the development of therapeutic skills such as counselling. We also offer a module taught by people with experience of mental health problems. On successful completion of the programme you are eligible to apply for professional registration as a Mental Health Nurse, and also for an accredited counselling skills certificate.
