Studying at Abertay

Why SCS?

CL9

The areas we excel in at SCS - Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Environmental Science, Civil Engineering and Construction, Food and Health Science and Forensic Science - are at the heart of our society, and of our world, in the 21st century.
These will be among the sciences that will shape our future. We recognise that skills and the qualifications in these disciplines are much in demand.

Our programmes have been designed to secure your future employability and ensure you have fun along the way. Whether it's taking part in the 'Scenes of Crime' work in Forensic Sciences, developing innovative approaches to nutrition, diet and exercise, or creating computer-generated images of the Scottish landscape in Natural Resources Management, the emphasis is on the development of relevant knowledge and skills and ensuring our graduates are confident thinkers.

Why choose SCS?

  • We believe that in the future there will be much greater importance attached to flexibility and interdisciplinary abilities. Because of this we have developed innovative courses with the other Schools at Abertay. Our courses in Bioinformatics, Health Sciences and Natural Resource Management are the fruit of this collaboration, and our involvement in Abertay's research institutes places us at the forefront of the unified science of the 21st century.
  • In 2002 the UK Government's analysis of research found that our Environmental Science group is the best in Scotland and one of the best in the UK.
  • With over 70% of our 600 undergraduates coming from Tayside our position as a Scottish centre of science excellence is secure. Of our 100 postgraduates, 80% come from overseas, ensuring that we have a dynamic, vibrant and diverse mix of ideas and cultures, helping us to claim a place as an international innovator in science.
  • In Scotland alone, there are now over 250 dedicated biotechnology companies and this sector is growing extremely rapidly, at around 30% per annum. Scotland is a genuine centre of excellence for science, and Scotland's life sciences industry is one of the most vibrant in Europe - employing over 25,000 people.
  • Scotland has secured a place as a global leader in life sciences and technology, and we work closely with industry and government, through research and consultancy, and share in that global excellence.
  • Where the cost of education is at the forefront of every student's mind, our fees represent the greatest possible value. Add that to the benefits of living in Dundee and the cost of an education at SCS is a compelling reason for choosing us.
  • A degree is a major commitment. Our courses are enjoyable and testing, student life at UAD is dynamic, and Dundee is a wonderful place to live.
