By bring together a range of related disciplines – including criminology, forensic science, organisational management, psychology and sociology – Abertay's policing and security course offers you a unique overview of the work of police forces and the private security industry.
The interdisciplinary nature of this course and the emphasis on the transferable skills and attributes valued by employers – which you will be taught by staff across our different academic schools – will equip graduates for careers in the police and the private security industry.
Building on the forensics and psychology skills in the early part of our policing and security course, you will also study how the law works, how science is used to investigate and prevent crimes, the rise in computer-based and corporate crimes, and how major incidents can be handled.
As the only undergraduate degree of its type in Scotland, you will have a strong advantage in getting a job in crime prevention – from improving a community through tackling neighbourhood crime, to protecting the nation by working on terrorism.
The teaching staff on the Abertay policing and security course have close links to the police, forensic science experts (including other Abertay colleagues) and people working in the criminal justice system. This expertise will directly feed into your learning.
Employers for our graduates could include the police, private security firms, the prison service, military policy or non-governmental organisations. With extensive use of crime scene facilities, your course at Abertay will help prepare you to work in this demanding industry.
