Computer security courses

Where will our computer security courses take you?

Computer security courses – ethical hacking

Abertay's computer security courses include ethical hacking, where you check the security of a computer system or network by simulating a malicious attack. The process involves an active analysis of weaknesses, technical flaws or vulnerabilities. These security issues are presented to the system owner, with a proposal for solving the problems.

During this course, you will be given information about the latest tools and techniques used by hackers to break into systems. You will be shown not only how hackers break into web servers, steal information and how to remotely control someone’s computer, but also how to put countermeasures in place to prevent this happening.

Abertay is the first university to offer an undergraduate course with the word hacking in its title. By studying with us, you will be at the forefront of developments in this important area.

Computer security courses – intelligence informatics and forensics

Our new computer security courses – BSc (Hons) Digital Forensics and MSc Intelligence and Security Informatics – have been developed to produce security professionals capable of handling and understanding complex data. These courses combine criminology, psychology and sophisticated computing knowledge.

Effective security measures have to be developed to filter, analyse and interpret this information, whether it’s for national security or solving digital crimes. With the changing nature of security risks, there is great demand for skilled professionals who can use technology to prevent cyber-crime and terrorism.

Computer security courses – jobs

Students on our computer security courses in ethical hacking can enter careers as computer security specialists with large companies, auditing organisations, or as IT security consultants. Employers also need network managers and web developers with a strong understanding of security threats.

Graduates of our forensics and security informatics courses can enter careers with law enforcement and government agencies, private security consultants, the police force and the Ministry of Defence. As an area of growing international importance, graduates with these skills will be in ever greater demand.
