Tourism is a thriving area of the Scottish and the international economy, offering a variety of career opportunities in both public and private sectors.
High quality graduates at senior and middle management level, with an understanding of the tourism industry and who are also able to make use of an advanced knowledge of management practice, are essential to this lively and valuable industry.
Our Tourism Management course examines tourism from a variety of viewpoints – economic, sociological, cultural, geographical, political, and legal.
At the same time, students learn to understand the complex environment in which tourism occurs, recognise tourism opportunities and risks, and develop their capabilities to achieve ambitious goals through tourism and business projects.
Year 1 – Business, organisation and professional skills Essential business knowledge, analytical, problem-solving and creative skills, together with a sound understanding of the local and global economic environment.
Year 2 - Core management knowledge and skills A detailed understanding of the economic context of tourism, and of the key features of effective management, plus essential presentation and job market skills, and an understanding of the scope and features of the tourism industry.
Year 3 – Management and tourism Management roles and responsibilities, and their contributions to organisational performance in the tourism industry, along with core tourism planning and management skills, and tourism project evaluation.
Year 4 - The strategic challenge High-level skills and knowledge of the challenges of tourism management in today’s global economy, with a tourism dissertation.
How you learn
The course combines the development of contemporary management knowledge with the development of professional, interpersonal and leadership skills.
Throughout your course you will be involved in group tasks as well as individual projects, and you will gain valuable practice in analysing business problems and presenting creative solutions to real organisational issues.
In year 3, you may be able to use any experience you gain from part-time work to contribute to your course of study, and some students may obtain a business placement in semester 2.
How you are assessed
As well as producing essays and taking examinations, you will develop individual and group solutions to business challenges, and present your findings in a range of professional formats.

Although there is no limit to the number of points that you can accumulate, for entry to Abertay you must have qualifications at an appropriate level (SCQF 6/NQF 3); you cannot count the same or similar qualifications twice; Standard Grades, Intermediate 2s, GCSEs and key/core skills cannot be counted; and D grades at SQA Higher and Advanced Higher are not counted.
Applicants who have taken either SQA Highers or A Levels must offer at least three Highers or two A Levels for degree entry (or two Highers or one A Level for DipHE entry). If you have studied a subject at two different levels, the most advanced will be taken into consideration; e.g. if you studied both Higher Biology and Advanced Higher Biology, then only the Advanced Higher will be counted.
Overseas
All applicants are required to provide certified proof of competence in English Language. The University's minimum requirements are IELTS 6.0 (with no band lower than 5.0), TOEFL CBT 223, TOEFL 563, TOEFL IBT 85 or a suitable equivalent qualification.
Mature
Applications from mature students are assessed on the same criteria used for school leavers, e.g. SQA Highers or GCE A Levels, where relevant school leaving qualifications exist. For those without standard entry qualifications, consideration is given to experience gained as well as professional qualifications and other forms of learning that could provide evidence of ability to benefit from a particular course.
As this course is only available for entry to year 3, mature students are required to hold a Higher National Diploma in Tourism or its acceptable equivalent.

BA (Hons) Tourism Management is recognised by the majority of professional tourism bodies, and on its award graduates are eligible to apply for graduate membership of the Tourism Society and the Chartered Institute of Marketing – Travel Industry Group.
