What you study
Year 3
In both courses, the first two semesters concentrate on developing your understanding of how individuals make choices, how society influences and is shaped by those choices.
You will also develop your understanding of contemporary technologies for networked presentation and communication and the technical skills you will need to participate fully in online communities.
In the final two semesters, you will choose whether you want to specialise in the study of design and technology, including the environmental applications of technology (in the BSc course), or to focus on the application of design and technology to new business development (the BA course).
If you choose the BSc Design, Society and Technology, you will continue your study of choice and technology - the ethics of technology choices, and the principles of design choice. Finally, you will apply your knowledge and skills to the challenge of preserving our environment; learning about environmental issues and applying your decision-making and analysis skills, along with a range of specialist techniques, to the challenges they present.
If you choose the BA Enterprise and Design, your study of design will lead to the detailed study of new business development, and you will apply your knowledge of key business skills - marketing, finance, and planning - to a team-based environmental challenge.
How you learn
You will learn through workshops and seminars, working in small groups with the support and assistance of lecturers. Key information will be delivered in mini-lectures delivered within workshops and seminars, and the focus throughout will be on applying and developing knowledge in practice. You will have four hours of classes each week, and you should plan to spend an additional 16 hours each week preparing for classes, reading, and working on assessment tasks, and completing tasks that contribute to team progress on projects
How you are assessed
All assessments on these courses provide opportunities to develop skills vital for project and team work. These will include projects and reports that you will work on individually and in small groups, as well as presentations, essays and practical tasks. You will have the opportunity to develop your ability to evaluate the projects and solutions of your peers, and to respond to their assessment of your progress.
