What you study

What's on when?
Every day includes 2 study skill sessions, a session on IT skills and a session on information skills.

  • Monday - Basic sessions
  • Tuesday - Intermediate sessions
  • Wednesday - Advanced sessions
  • Thursday and Friday - repeats of what we reckon are the most important sessions that everyone should come along to

This gives you the chance to come to different sessions on different days, or even to take some sessions twice.

    What does it cover?
We cover all the fundamental skills that will be important to you and your success at university.

    Study skills:
  • Effective reading and research
  • Writing coursework
  • Taking good notes
  • Time management

    IT skills:
  • Using the university network
  • Mastering Microsoft Office

    Information skills:
  • Using the library
  • Making the most of online journals and databases
  • Referencing your work properly

    Is it for me?
Yes - if you are starting a course at Abertay in September and want to be well prepared.
Yes - if you are coming from college and want to be ready for the different ways you will be expected to study at university, for coursework assignments and for exams.
Yes - if you got your place in clearing and need to get ready fast.
Yes - if you're nervous about starting university and want a confidence boost.

The Bridging Programme is designed to be flexible so you can pick which sessions to come to and on which days and times. That way, you can focus on the skills you need most help with and juggle other commitments with your preparations to get off to a good start at university.

Up to three full days of preparation sessions are on offer.

How do I know what to come to?
  • Basic sessions are for you if you are: a school leaver, applying late through clearing, a mature student, or returning to education
  • Intermediate sessions are for you if you are a direct entrant joining second or third year of a degree and for everyone completing the basic sessions
  • Advanced sessions are for: direct entrants joining third or fourth year and for everyone completing the intermediate sessions
  • Pick the selection of basic, intermediate and advanced sessions to suit your needs. The more you come to, the better prepared you'll be.
