Why choose this course?
This MSc International Nursing is designed for qualified nurses from outside the European Union who wish to broaden their understanding of health related issues and develop their clinical expertise. The theoretical component of the course provides an opportunity for you to engage with some of the most important areas in nursing and health including international public health, and models of health care delivery.
This is an excellent opportunity for Registered Nurses (Adult) from outside the UK to gain a Masters level qualification, while at the same time becoming eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of the UK. You will be supported to develop your research and project management skills and to adopt a reflective, analytic and critical approach to your work. You will also have the chance to meet and speak with senior clinical colleagues and nurse leaders.
Successful completion of the Overseas Nursing Programme (ONP) component of the course provides you with the opportunity to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of the UK. This will enable you to seek work as a Registered Nurse in the UK and in those countries which recognise UK NMC registration.
You will be encouraged to examine global health policy and practice and you will also have the opportunity to develop advanced level skills. The Masters project provides you will with an opportunity to bring all of this together in the delivery of major piece of work that can take the form of a research project, a literature review or a practice development project.
The course has 8 modules:
Critical Issues in personal and professional development
This module provides students with the opportunity to examine and debate some of the major issues facing modern nurses. Topics for discussion include: professional power, accountability and responsibility, and the role of the nurse in relation to patient safety.
Global perspectives on health
This module provides students with the opportunity to examine and compare the structure, function, funding, and sustainability, of a range of international healthcare systems, including that of the UK.
Evidence-based practice
Students learn to explore and define clinical problems, search and evaluate the literature with a view to establishing the current state of knowledge in relation to specific issues. The focus is on the application of evidence to practice.
Comparative health
This module provides students with the opportunity to explore global trends in health, identifies and discusses current and future major health challenges and potential responses to these.
Research Methods
This module provides students with the opportunity to examine the main approaches to health related research and equips students with the skills required for the completion of their Masters Degree project.
Overseas Nurses Programme
This module is designed to familiarise you with the UK healthcare system. It includes spending time and being assessed in clinical practice areas. This module must be passed in order to be eligible for registration with the NMC.
Project
Under the guidance of an academic supervisor, students develop a 12,000 word literature review on a topic of relevance to nursing. This detailed piece of work will provide an opportunity for students to demonstrate their in-depth and critical understanding of an aspect of practice.
How you learn and are assessed
You will be taught through a combination of lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. The programme includes practice placement experience where you will be supported by a qualified mentor and by University staff. Typically you will attend class for between 10 and 12 hours per week with the expectation that you will complete an additional 20 to 25 hours of private study per week.
Assessments are designed to test the extent to which you have met module learning outcomes. Modes of assessment include; essays and case studies, observed structured clinical examinations, clinical practice placement reports and projects.
To be considered for entry to this course, you will need:
*Good health is established via a medical examination, while good character is established via references and criminal records check or equivalent.
Your future
Successful completion of the programme will allow you to apply for registration as a First Level Nurse (Adult) with the UK NMC.
It is expected that, as a graduate from this programme, you will be well placed to find work as a Registered Nurse in the UK, or in those countries where registration with the UK NMC is recognised. You may also choose to return to your country of origin to seek employment. As a masters graduate from a UK University with NMC registration you should be well positioned to find work.
