Intro

Why choose this course?

  • The course is accredited by COSCA (Counselling in Scotland)
  • Enables participants to develop counselling skills that can be applied in their present or potential work settings
  • Provides opportunities to reflect on practice, and develop a conceptual understanding of the aims and process of counselling
  • Encourages awareness of the ways in which personal qualities and experience can be used in a counselling skills role

The Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills is designed to offer high-quality skills and personal development opportunities to those using counselling approaches and ideas in a wide variety of settings: health, education, faith communities, criminal justice, human resource management, and the voluntary sector.

The Graduate Certificate produces graduates who are resourceful and flexible in their use of counselling skills, and able to work collaboratively with others to recognise opportunities for the development of counselling relationships in a range of human service environments.  Abertay is one of the leading UK providers of counselling education; students have access to purpose built training facilities.

What you study

You will study:

  • the theory and practice of counselling skills
  • making sense of the process of counselling
  • professional issues around maintaining confidentiality boundaries
  • self-awareness of how you interact with clients

How you learn

The Graduate Certificate is completed over one academic year (September-June).  Attendance is one morning or evening a week, with four all-day Saturday meetings.  Additional time is needed for independent study.
